Last night, I made some minor edits to almost all the earlier chapters, planting hints about Gorok's memories of his parents' death. I was originally going to have him "freak out" every time he heard footsteps crunching on something (gravel, snow, etc.) because that would make him remember the evil mage who froze his parents so that they fell and shattered and then walked over the broken corpses. But that meant every time he heard someone walk on gravel, he'd be reminded. The sound was too common. Now, instead, I've got him reacting to the sound of ripping fabric because the mage turned his parents to fabric and then literally ripped them apart. That might not be as evocative as the mage freezing them solid, but it is enough to give Gorok a horrid memory -- especially the combination of the mundane and the magic. Ripping sounds aren't as common as crunching sounds, so that will help. If that doesn't work, I'll try something else -- a sound (like the dinner bell) or a smell.
