Over this (long) weekend, I wrote a bit more of Chapter Eight. Maybe more than I realized because it got to 10 kilobytes before I realized. (Hmmm, guess I forgot to count the morning snoogling scene in my notes here...) Wulf threw me a surprise when the guard hassled him about taking the snowcats into the mess hall. Originally, I had him bribe the guard. But then, I thought of something more in character. Wulf tells the guard a bit of knowledge, warning him about something that could happen -- much like the guy in "The Dead Zone" used to do. Then of course I thought "OK so why hasn't he figured out Gorok's big secrets?" I thought of reasons why he hadn't. Maybe he didn't want to "read" him, he knew Gorok had to tell him on his own. Maybe Gorok is a natural "blocker." Then I thought... why assume he doesn't know? Wulf can be reserved when he has to be. OK, he can keep information from Gorok when he has to. :-> So Gorok realizes that he knew all along but didn't bring it up. He has to cope with how much Wulf knew, why he didn't mention this, etc.

I also decided Koura should turn out to be Gorok's familiar. So that meant going back to some of the earlier scenes and mentioning that some of the magicians have familiars. Not all, though. It probably depends on the school they follow. The illusion of the hawk Kensin casts in the first chapter is now a real hawk. He can use that hawk in Chapter Seven, as well. I'm not sure if Tufan will be a familiar or just Wulf's cuddly pet.
