Wow. Friday was a great writing day. First, during lunch, I plunged right into the scene where Gorok, Kensin, and Wulf looked for Bel int he old city. (Originally Jupe was there instead of Wulf, but I though, "Yeah, right. Send Jupe in for that?!") They had to face down a swarm of evil white-faces silent mages wearing black robes. Well at least they weren't wearing skin-tight black costumes... The big decision (for both me and Gorok) will be whether Gorok uses the spell Wulf implanted to stop the evil mime mages now or later, to save Wulf from an orb. It would make sense that Wulf might have planted an orb-shattering spell in him once he realized he had powers.

And then, as if that weren't enough, an idea that had been poking me with a needle started to jab me with a Swiss army knife. Now that I had the shapeshifter, I had earlier asked myself "What if Sovil wasn't lying about being raped by Gorok? He really did believe he was raped by Gorok -- because the shapeshifter did it." I tried to avoid thinking about that idea, because I knew it would have Big implications, but out came its Swiss army knife. Nope, I couldn't play lip service to it by having Wulf prove his innocence despite huge odds. So the end of Chapter 3 is vastly different. Instead of suddenly becoming Wulf's room mate, Gorok is locked into the little cell in the wall of the guardroom. And in Chapter 4, he is flogged. And then, for added punishment, left on the flogging platform for hours. He would have stayed there a full 24 hours, but luckily, it turns out he had an alibi, so he will be freed and treated by Wulf, and the next day, Sovil will be flogged for lying. I think the time Gorok recovers in the infirmary will give him some wonderful time with Wulf. They get to talk with jumping each other's bones. Wulf can also make the guards give Gorok a special privilege (like getting to keep the snowcats! just that of that one! aha!) in return for screwing up very very badly.

And of course, Kensin and Sovil hate him because they are sure he really did rape Sovil. It isn't until the end of Chapter 10 (now Chapter 11!) when they realize there is a shapeshifter. Gee, I wonder if Gorok will ever bring up that "incident" in the herb garden to Wulf? Or maybe he will realize what must have happened and decide not to mention it. ;->
