Last night, I wrote some more of Chapter 12. I decided on a good way to get things moving. Koura must become Gorok's familiar, and this was the best time for that to happen. After all, Gorok had used his first spell, albeit unknowingly and unwittingly. (Now that he can communicate with Koura through their thoughts, perhaps he won't be so upset at Wulf for teaching him the spell without telling him.) Gorok freed Bel from the altar and told Koura to take Bel to freedom. But I hit a snag once I realized I needed a way for Gowan (a mage without the impediment of a torc) to find to a standstill with Gorok, Wulf, and Kensin. I'll think of something.

Another possibility is that the shapeshifter could show up, either in the guise of Bel (trying to persuade Gowan that he has the wrong person on that altar) or in the guise of Gowan. That depends on whether the shapeshifter is helping Gowan. (If the shapeshifter is Gowan, then this won't work, of course.)

Also, I have to remember to mention Gowan in earlier parts of the story. This shouldn't be too hard as he's Kensin's notorious father and most likely part of the Triad.
