I haven't done as much editing today -- or yesterday -- as I had hoped. I drove to my parents' house yesterday, and for various reasons, that took longer than expected. Then, this morning and this afternoon, I worked on my next At the Back Fence
segment for All About Romance
. This time, I'm writing about beta heroes (often referred to as the kind, gentler heroes), but I'm trying to use different attacks on the question of beta heroes. I will also be writing a segment on gamma heroes, who some readers refer to as "cuddly alphas." Other readers don't think gamma heroes exist -- they think it's a term readers invented because they were embarrassed to admit that they like alpha heroes, who after all, are often not considered "PC."
By the way, I think alpha heroes get a lot of undeserved flak. One thing I realized while writing an earlier ATBF (the one called Vikings & Knights & Indians, Oh My!
) is that it's often not the alpha hero who is the problem, it's the fact that he is so often linked with a wimpy heroine. The best stories throw alpha heroes together with strong heroines. I guess you could say that both Gorok and Wulf are both alphas, even if Gorok submits to Wulf in the bedroom -- that's part of what Wulf likes about him, and I think that makes their relationship something different. (Well besides little things like Gorok being a gay barbarian on an island of gay mages...)
