Last night, I did some more edits -- this time getting through all of Wulf's POV section for the mage duel part of the chapter.
I also got a nifty new idea for the Leona and Maddox story. This idea involves the conspiracy that Leona's father was embroiled in. It goes like this:
Maddox doesn't realize it, but he was was part of some biological "plan" to create a human without feelings? (His father and perhaps others thought this would be a way to create the "perfect" judge or the perfect ruler because emotions had tripped up other rulers recently. Even those who objected were still caught up in it becuase they couldn't reveal the plan once they knew about it, for various reasons.) The experiment, of course, failed. Maddox does have feelings. This is why his father punished him when he showed emotions, and why he learned to control or at least hide his emotions. Now either Leona's father Goren knew about this and was trying to cover up the information, and this is why he ended up hip-deep in trouble and charged with treason. Or... maybe he just found out but didn't realize that the experiment failed, he thinks Maddox really is a man without feelings, and the idea of such a man in charge scared him, so he tried to take Maddox down. (I like the first idea best, and it would also mean Rissa and other councilmembers would be involved.)
